Therefore, if you use hanging indents in your reference pages, you will need to add extra space after each reference to account for the different lengths of sentences within the document. The hanging indent looks nice and is easy to read however, it can cause problems when citing references because most citation software assumes that all lines of text are equal length. For example, if the body text was indented 1/4 inch, then the reference page would not have any indentation. It is the inverse of a typical paragraph in which the first line is indented. The first line of your reference should align with the left margin, and each subsequent line should be indented one-half inch from the left margin.
